Always with her. Chelsea Clinton gave a heartfelt speech about her mom, Hillary Clinton, on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on Thursday, July 28 — and the politician couldn’t stop beaming during it.
Chelsea, 36, painted a picture of what it was like to have the former secretary of state, 68, by her side growing up. She said Hillary would leave notes every day that she was away on business, often took her to the Dinosaur National Park and never missed a soccer game or piano recital.
“Regardless of what happened in my life, she was always, always there for me,” Chelsea said. “That feeling, being valued and loved, that’s something that my mom wants for every child. It is the calling of her life.”
As a grandmother, Hillary is just as present. “Charlotte loves FaceTiming with Grandma,” Chelsea said of her 22-month-old daughter. “My mom can be about to walk on stage for a debate or a speech, and it just doesn’t matter. She’ll drop everything for a few minutes of blowing kisses and reading Chugga Chugga Choo Choo with her granddaughter.” (Chelsea and her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, are also parents of son Aiden, 1 month.)
Additionally, Chelsea spoke about the former New York senator’s devotion to public service. “People ask me all the time, how does she do it? How does she keep going? Here’s how: It’s because she never ever forgets who she’s fighting for,” she said. “[She’s] a woman who’s spent her entire life fighting for women and children. A progressive who will protect our planet from climate change and our communities from violence. Who will reform our criminal justice system and who knows that women’s rights are human rights, and who knows that LGBT rights are human rights, here at home and around the world.”
“I’m voting for a fighter,” she added, “who never, ever gives up, and who believes we can always do better when we come together and work together.”
The former first lady stayed backstage during the moving address. Her campaign team posted a photo of her watching Chelsea on a TV screen. “So proud,” the caption read.
Chelsea then introduced Hillary to the stage, where the politician officially became the first woman ever to accept the presidential nomination by a large party. Chelsea and Bill Clinton watched her speak from their seats and later praised her via Twitter.
“Mom, I love you, I am so proud of you & I am grateful every single day you’re my mom. It meant so much to be able to tell the country why,” Chelsea tweeted.
The former president, 69, added: “More than ever, I’m with her, our next President.”
