Sarah McBride, the first transgender person to speak at a major-party convention, used her time onstage to tell the audience that despite advances in LGBT rights, there is still a long way to go in the fight for equality. “Will we be a nation where there is only one way to love, only one way to look, and only one way to live?” she asked.
ORIGINAL STORY: What we’ve all been waiting for! Hillary Clinton is expected to formally accept her party’s nomination for president and deliver a speech to wrap up the 2016 Democratic National Convention at 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 28.
The former secretary of state, 68, will be introduced by her daughter, Chelsea Clinton. The only child of Hillary and Bill Clinton got visibly choked up on Tuesday when her mom made history as the first female presidential nominee for a major party. After the delegates made it official, the former first lady briefly addressed the crowd via satellite from New York.
“Hello, Philadelphia! I am so happy. It has been a great day and night. What an incredible honor that you have given me, and I can’t believe we just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet,” Hillary said. “Thanks to you and to everyone who has fought so hard to make this possible. This is really your victory. This is really your night. And if there are any little girls out there who stayed up late to watch, let me just say, I may become the first woman president, but one of you is next.”
Thursday’s theme of “Stronger Together” will focus on how the country is strongest when Americans work together to solve problems. The last night of the convention will feature remarks by politicians including New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi as well as celebs such as Chloë Grace Moretz. There will also be musical performances by Sheila E. + Family and Katy Perry.
Last night during during the DNC, President Barack Obama took the stage to praise Hillary as more than qualified to be commander in chief, saying she was capable of doing the job “backwards in heels.” He recalled that during the last presidential election, she was a “tough” opponent as they battled it out for a year and a half.
The man who knows her best, Bill, gave a very personal address on Tuesday, reminding voters of Hillary’s role as a wife and mother. He told the story of how he proposed to her three times before she finally said yes (which the Democratic presidential nominee previously revealed to Us Weekly in her 25 Things). He also called her the “best darn change-maker I’ve ever known” and his “best friend.”
