And so it begins! Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump battled it out during their first presidential debate Monday, September 26 — and it was a doozy.
The former Secretary of State, 68, and the mogul, 70, covered a variety of topics as NBC‘s Lester Holt moderated at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York. The 90-minute showdown incited laughs, cringes and one-liners that viewers couldn’t help but discuss on social media.
Voters in particular poked fun at Trump’s sniffling frenzy (tissue, anyone?), Clinton’s shoulder shimmy action, his incessant interruptions, Holt’s “disappearance” when he seemed to check out from, well, moderating, and the candidates’ argument over stamina, which led to a mic-drop moment from a preternaturally calm Clinton.
“As soon as he travels to 112 countries and negotiates a peace deal, a cease-fire … or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a congressional committee, he can talk to me about stamina,” she quipped.
Even some stars shared hilarious memes. Chelsea Handler posted a photo of Trump standing at his podium. “When you realize you just lost to a girl,” the caption read. Justin Theroux later posted a pic of Holt dressed up as Where’s Waldo?
Lena Dunham watched the debate too. The Girls actress, who spoke at Clinton’s Democratic National Convention, posted a GIF of Clinton dressed as Wonder Woman. “#SheSlays,” the caption read.
