Dolce & Gabbana messed with the wrong dad. The Italian designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana raised some eyebrows in a new interview with Italy’s Panorama magazine, in which they blasted “gay adoptions” and IVF.
“The only family is the traditional one,” the pair said in the controversial article (via The Telegraph). “No chemical offsprings and rented uterus: life has a natural flow, there are things that should not be changed.”
Dolce noted, “You are born to a mother and a father — or at least that’s how it should be. I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented uterus, semen chosen from a catalog.”
One person taking extreme offense to the designers’ comments is Sir Elton John. The Brit, 67, who shares sons Zachary, 4, and Elijah, 2, with his husband David Furnish, took to Instagram on Sunday, March 15, to slam Dolce & Gabbana.
“How dare you refer to my beautiful children as ‘synthetic,'” he wrote, adding, “And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana.”
Though Dolce and Gabbana are both openly gay and previously dated one another, the pair have spoken out in the past against gay marriage. Dolce noted that procreation “must be an act of love.”
The brand is beloved by many A-listers, who often sport the gowns on the red carpet at major events. Madonna, Scarlett Johansson, and Gisele Bundchen have all modeled for Dolce & Gabbana ad campaigns.
