More than 30 people burned their feet while attempting to walk across hot coals as part of a Tony Robbins motivational even in Dallas on Thursday, June 23.

According to The Associated Press, five people were hospitalized from their injuries, while approximately 30 to 40 more were treated on-site for burns caused by the walk.

One participant, Paul Gold, told the AP that he believed the problem arose because event staff didn’t wait long enough before adding more coals to the fire. (Gold told reporters that he had taken part in another Robbins event in Florida and did not sustain any injuries. “[It was] a very good experience,” he said.)

Another attendee, Jacqueline Luxembourg, told the AP that those who were hurt caused their own injuries because they were more focused on taking selfies than on the walk itself.

“It has nothing to do with the training,” she said. “It has absolutely nothing to do with Tony Robbins.”

Robbins, 56, has yet to comment on the Dallas disaster.

According to the self-help guru’s website, Robbins’ “fire walk” is a regular part of his “Unleash the Power Within” seminar, and is meant to represent individuals conquering their fears.

“Walking over those hot coals is a symbolic experience that proves if you can make it through the fire, you can make it through anything,” the site reads.

There were more than 7,000 participants at Thursday’s event, and medical personnel were on-hand to treat any potential injuries.

“It is always the goal to have no guests with any discomfort afterwards, but it’s not uncommon to have fewer than 1 percent of participants experience ‘hot spots,’ which is similar to a sunburn that can be treated with aloe,” spokeswoman Jenner Connelly told CNN.
