The same day President-elect Donald Trump met with Kanye West, he reportedly also squeezed Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour into his busy schedule.
A Trump transition official confirmed the meeting to ABC News, and ABC’s Candace Smith reported on Twitter that the pair met for half an hour and “discussed a range of issues,” according to a source.
Interestingly, Vogue officially endorsed Trump’s Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, prior to the November 8 election. “Vogue has no history of political endorsements,” the editorial read. “Given the profound stakes of this one, and the history that stands to be made, we feel that should change.”
Wintour also hosted several fundraisers for Clinton throughout her campaign, including a pre–Fashion Week runway show with Chelsea Clinton. According to the Business of Fashion, the former secretary of state consulted the fashion editor on her wardrobe choices for important events leading up to Election Day. Wintour also reportedly approached designers to obtain outfits for Clinton.
Just days before the meeting, the Condé Nast artistic director was overheard criticizing Trump and the Donald J. Trump Foundation on a crowded train and later issued an apology, according to The Mirror. In a statement to the British newspaper, she said, “I immediately regretted my comments, and I apologize. I hope that President-elect Trump will be a successful president for us all.”
However, Wintour has history with Trump too. She attended the business mogul’s wedding to Melania Trump in 2005 and featured the bride on the cover of Vogue that year. She also offered Ivanka Trump a job at Vogue after she graduated college, which Donald’s daughter politely declined, the businesswoman told Good Morning America in 2009.
The ex-Apprentice host has previously praised Wintour as a “winner.” When President Barack Obama reportedly considered her for U.S. ambassador to Great Britain back in 2012, Donald tweeted, “I am happy to hear that Pres. Obama is considering giving Anna Wintour @voguemagazine an ambassadorship. She is a winner & really smart!”
