Adding to the family! Derek Hough is more than ecstatic for his sister Julianne Hough’s recent engagement to NHL player Brooks Laich. The Dancing With the Stars pro opened up to Us Weekly about the news at West Hollywood’s Greystone Manor on Thursday, Aug. 27.
“I can’t wait,” Hough, 30, told Us at Just Jared’s Way Too Wonderland presented by Ever After High. “He’s a great guy, he’s a great dude. I’m excited to have a new brother, man. I’m excited!”
The Grease: Live actress, 27, announced her engagement to Laich, 32, on Aug. 18. On Thursday, the bride-to-be showed off her gorgeous (and massive!) new Lorraine Schwartz ring, and described the proposal as “magical and sweet.”
Us confirmed in February 2014 that the pair were an item. Derek has grown close to the Washington Capitals player since then, but says he sometimes walks out when the future spouses get too lost in their own world.
“We’ve been on a tour bus, we were on tour, and she would FaceTime him every day after the show. The same time, clockwork, and sometimes they just talk about the most random things and I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I gotta leave,'” Derek told Us.
Clearly, Laich makes her happy. So much so, that Derek has never had to give him a stern talking to. “It’s funny because he’s the kind of guy where you don’t even have to have that kind of conversation,” he explained to Us. “He would never wrong her in that way ever.”
As Julianne begins wedding planning, Derek is already looking ahead to the day that she becomes a mom. “Oh my gosh. She’ll be amazing,” he told Us. “She’ll be amazing whenever that day comes.”
