Cheryl Tiegs Clarifies Ashley Graham Comments: ‘I Want All to Be Healthy’

Cheryl Tiegs took to Twitter on Thursday, February 25, to clarify her comments earlier in the day, when she criticized Sports Illustrated for glamorizing plus-size models like Ashley Graham.

The supermodel took a swipe at curvy models everywhere, including cover girl Graham, during an interview with E! in which she stated, “I don’t like that we’re talking about full-figured women, because it’s glamorizing them. Because your waist should be smaller than 35 [inches].”

“That’s what Dr. Oz said, and I’m sticking to it,” she continued. “No, I don’t think it’s healthy. Her face is beautiful. Beautiful. But I don’t think it’s healthy in the long run.”

Tiegs, 68, quickly found herself in hot water, with many people offended by her choosing to dis Graham, 28. Tiegs, who has been featured in Sports Illustrated on many occasions throughout her career, then took to Twitter to clarify her statement.

“To clarify re bodyweight. Being anorexic/bulimic/overweight all connected to health problems. I want all to be as healthy as they can,” she said.

The responses were far from positive.

“@CherylTiegs Body-shaming, what you did, worsens eating disorders and other issues linked to body image. If you care so much about the ‘health’ of anyone, you need to realize that you are not their doctor & have absolutely no business giving them medical advice,” one follower responded.

And if Graham’s IMG Models page is anything to go by, it looks like Tiegs’ health advice for Graham may have been a little premature.

Listing the model’s stats, the website says Graham’s waist is 30 inches — five whole inches beneath Tiegs’ magic Dr. Oz number, the figure he gives as being the maximum desired before increased risk of certain chronic disease, like diabetes.

“I’m disappointed in you,” blasted another Twitter user. “Ashley is a beautiful/healthy woman; just because she’s not a stick figure doesn’t mean she is obese.”
