On his radio show Wednesday morning, Carson Daly made arguably homophobic remarks while adding his two cents about a buzzed-about incident aboard a Jet Blue flight Tuesday, in which pilot Clayton Osbon had a bizarre in-flight meltdown — forcing his copilot to make an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas.
The Voice host Daly, 38, cracked a joke about the passengers who restrained Osbon during his freakout, who happened to be security professionals. "With my luck, it would be like … 'this is the flight going to [the gay pride parade] in San Francisco," Daly said, joking that stereotypically gay passengers wouldn't be willing to help out in an in-flight emergency.
Following a public outcry, Daly apologized for his offensive jokes in a statement to GLAAD.
"We live in a time where gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals find courage every day to overcome adversity, stand up to bullying and find equality. I'm truly saddened that my words today suggested otherwise," Daly said.
"I've long been a supporter of Gay and Lesbian rights, and I'm saddened that my comments, however unintentional, offended anyone, specifically members of the LGBT community. The fact that I have hurt anyone is devastating," he continued. "I'm not that guy. I'm proud to be an ally of the LGBT community and will continue to fight with them."
