Some Californians are ready to cut ties with the United States. Voters who are upset over Donald Trump being elected as the next president took to Twitter with the hashtag #Calexit on Tuesday, November 8.
The phrase, along with #Caleavefornia, began to trend on social media shortly before it was announced that Trump beat his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, in the polls.
The former secretary of State, 69, won California’s 55 electoral votes, receiving more than 2,179,207 votes over the mogul in that state.
“If Trump wins I am announcing and funding a legitimate campaign for California to become its own nation,” one commenter wrote.
A second frustrated person wrote: “I no longer will refer to myself as an American, I am a Californian. #calexit.”
A third voter added: “We are screwed, America. #notmypresident #ElectionNight #Caleavefornia.”
The term first made headlines back in June following the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union, which was coined Brexit.
The independent campaign Yes California in Sacramento, California, hopes that the state will break away from the rest of the U.S. by 2019. According to The Hollywood Reporter, organizers plan to have an informational session about their next move outside the State Capital Building in Sacramento on Wednesday.
