Teppan-yucky! Andy Cohen revealed to Jimmy Fallon that he recently found himself in an uncomfortable situation with Tori Spelling after he joked about her Benihana incident on his late-night show, Watch What Happens Live.
The Bravo exec told the story after Fallon expressed how much he enjoyed Cohen’s show. “You know what’s fun?” the Tonight Show host, 41, began. “How free you are… You get to say whatever you want.”
Cohen, 47, then explained how it was both a blessing and a curse. He gets to drink booze with celebs in his clubhouse and have unfiltered discussions, but sometimes, those discussions result in trouble. “You know, actually, something happened recently,” said Cohen, who was promoting his new SiriusXM channel, Radio Andy. “Did you hear the story about Tori Spelling getting burned at Benihana?”
In April, Spelling fell on a grill at a Benihana teppanyaki restaurant in L.A.’s Encino neighborhood, and suffered second and third-degree burns on her arm. The Beverly Hills, 90210 alum, 42, subsequently filed a lawsuit over the injuries, which required her to get skin grafts.
Cohen said he unwittingly offended the True Tori star when he tried to make light of the incident. “I made a joke about it,” Cohen explained. “I made a chicken cacciatore [catch-a-Tori] joke about it.” Spelling caught wind of his comments, and was not amused.
“She emailed me and goes, ‘Dude, just so you know, I really like you… but this is not funny.’ And she launched into this very long email about how serious it was.”
Cohen, who’s a huge 90210 fan, felt awful and sent her an apology. Unfortunately, he misread one part of Spelling’s initial email, thinking that she wasn’t able to eat due to the injuries. “And at the bottom, I wrote, ‘And also, EAT SOMETHING!'”
