Duchess Kate gave birth to her third child with Prince William on Monday, April 23, leaving just about every royal watcher with the same question: What will the baby be named?
According to the London-based betting company Ladbrokes, the top predictions for the name of the new prince are Arthur at 5:1, James at 8:1 and Albert at 10:1. Other contenders include Frederick at 16:1, Philip at 16:1, Thomas at 20:1 and Henry at 20:1.
The BBC reported that some experts are speculating that the name might also reflect Kate’s side of the family, while others are doubtful that the moniker will have a modern twist.
“Tradition plays a huge part in the British royal family, even in the 21st century,” Majesty magazine managing editor Joe Little told the broadcaster. “It will probably be something we have heard attributed to a prince before. It’s quite likely to follow the traditional route that William and Kate seem to favor.”
Little added that the newborn’s great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II “would obviously be consulted” first, but “might not necessarily intervene and prevent a name from being used.”
William, 35, and Kate, 36, chose traditional names for their first two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. The 4-year-old prince was named after six former kings of England, including the queen’s late father, King George VI. Meanwhile, the 2-year-old princess’ moniker came from William’s father, Prince Charles. Charlotte is also the middle name of Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton.
