“We are so stoked for the second baby,” he told Us on Wednesday, February 7. “Nicole and I didn’t know what to expect with No. 1, we’ve gone through it with one child and now it’s going to be the same, we really went through the process of learning how to care for a baby, so we feel a little more prepared, but also know that two is going to be very, very different.”

The pair announced that they were expecting a new bundle of joy last August by posting matching photos to their social media accounts of Johnson, 32, holding their first child, Boomer. “Number 2 on the way!!!! So excited!!” Phelps, 32, wrote at the time.

“We kind of have the same attitude that we had for number one and hope for the best and everything going as smooth as possible and hoping for a healthy baby and learning how challenging it is,” he said to Us. “We really are now focused on making sure the baby is healthy and Nicole is happy and healthy.”

The swimmer also told Us that his 1-year-old son has somewhat of an understanding that a new baby is on the way, but that it still might cause a bit of a shock. “It’s going to be a big awakening when we bring home a new sibling,” the Olympic swimmer told Us. “I’m not worried though, he’s so good with kids naturally, so in terms of adding another to the mix, he’s going to be a great brother.”

The parents have purchased a gift for their son ahead of the second baby’s arrival, and now Phelps is on the search for the perfect push gift for his wife. “We got a present for Boomer and for the new baby to come home to, so now I just have to worry about my wife,” he told Us. “She got a little something last time and I’m looking for a present for this time, but time is running out, it feels that baby could come any day now, so my back is up against the wall. I have to find something soon.”

The 23-time gold medalist revealed that this pregnancy has been different for them as a couple. “It’s been a good, enjoyable one with me being here for this pregnancy,” he told Us. “Last time I was gone to get ready for the Olympics, so I was in Colorado Springs when Nicole went into labor.”

He added: “I’ve learned to have patience with our first child and now getting ready for a second. I’m trying to be as helpful around the house and do all the chores and baby prepping the house that I can, so Nicole can have it easier.”

The Olympian partnered with KRAVE in 2016 and he credits the brand of meat and poultry snacks for fueling his workouts, which he says are helping him be a better person. “The biggest thing for me is really working out and trying to be more fully engaged in everything that I’m doing,” he shared with Us. “I have to get a workout, for my brain and to keep myself happy and sane.”

He added: “Working out makes it so I can be a better husband, father and just all around better person.”

The couple secretly married in June 2016 after dating on and off for eight years.
