Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin waited to have sex for the first time until they were married. The pair confirmed their pre-marital celibacy in the March 2019 cover story of Vogue.
In the interview, the “Baby” singer extensively detailed his feelings about sex, mental health and religion, revealing that he had “a legitimate problem with sex” since discovering his faith. Thinking it was the one vice holding him back from a deeper relationship with God, he remained celibate for a year before marrying Baldwin.
“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because he wants rules and stuff,” the star explained to the magazine. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul.”
Bieber and Baldwin — who now goes by Hailey Bieber — are both part of the evangelical Christian megachurch, Hillsong Church.
The 24-year-old Canada native admitted he thinks the big man upstairs noted his positive change. “And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result,” he noted. “There are perks. You get rewarded for good behavior.”
The singer also revealed that he and the model, 22, legally wed at City Hall in New York City in September 2018 — just three months after they reconnected — in part so they could consummate their relationship. But he made clear their rush to the courthouse was also due to true love. “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life,” he said. “I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.” (Bieber’s mom agrees.) They plan to celebrate with a second ceremony at a later date, and would like to start a family eventually.
Meanwhile, his bride wants their fans to know they’re in it for the long haul, despite their speedy courtship. “I’m fighting to do this the right way, to build a healthy relationship,” Baldwin said of marriage. “I want people to know that. We’re coming from a really genuine place.”
