Steven Avery’s new lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, has taken to Twitter to defend her client’s innocence. The Illinois attorney claims that the Making a Murderer subject “remains innocent [and] framed.”
In a series of tweets, Zellner criticized the prosecution in Avery’s murder trial and added that she “won’t quit until he’s out.”
As the hit Netflix series has chronicled, Avery spent 18 years in prison for sexual assault before being exonerated and released in 2003. In 2007, he was found guilty of the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
“Visit w/ Steven Avery at Waupon CC,” Zellner wrote on Tuesday, January 12. “He is identical to the other 17 innocent men we’ve cleared. Won’t quit until he’s out.”

One week later, Zellner met with Avery again. “38 boxes of files reviewed,” she tweeted. “He remains innocent & framed.”
The attorney, who joined Avery’s case Friday, January 8, also pointed out details that she believes were altered or staged to frame her client.
“Yesterday: in bedroom where key was ‘found,’” Zellner posted. “Room is so small could not have missed unless they searched w/ eyes closed.”
She added, “Also body was not burned in burn pit bc heat would have burned down Avery’s garage. A lot of junk science at the junkyard.”
“We are continuing to examine every aspect of Mr. Avery’s case and all of his legal options,” Zellner told The Wrap earlier this month. “We are confident Mr. Avery’s conviction will be vacated when we present the new evidence and results of our work to the appropriate court.”
