Following the attacks on Brussels early Tuesday, March 22, people around the world have been sharing one particular cartoon in solidarity for those affected by the harrowing incident in the Belgian capital.
French newspaper Le Monde shared the cartoon from its Instagram and Twitter accounts on Tuesday, writing: “13 November — 22 March. The tribute from Plantu.”
The cartoon by the French artist shows a figure wrapped in a French flag shedding a tear and wrapping one arm around its sobbing counterpart, shrouded in the Belgian national flag.
The cartoon, shared at 6:21 a.m. ET has garnered more than 16,000 retweets on Twitter and amassed over 6,500 likes on Instagram.
NBC News is reporting that at least 26 people were killed after multiple explosions hit a check-in area of Brussels Airport and a subway stop this morning. The terror level in the city was raised to 4, the highest number, and all public transportation across Brussels has since been shut down.
Authorities and personnel have advised locals to be on high alert and remain indoors. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel called the terrorist attacks a “dark moment for our country.”
The attacks were believed to be retaliation after Paris terror suspect Salah Abdeslam was captured in a raid last week in Belgium.
