For a night out on the town, Lily Collins took a beauty cue from decades past. The Rules Don’t Apply star, 27, tapped celebrity hairstylist Gregory Russell to assemble her deep brunette hair into an elegant updo.
“Profiled and privileged. Channeling the 60’s for an evening to honor the #HFPA at the LACC gala,” Collins captioned a shot of her French twist with loose, face-framing tendrils.
Russell, who also works with Miley Cyrus and Chloë Grace Moretz, tells Stylish that Collins’ ensemble was a starting point for the ‘do. “I was inspired by Lily’s dress to create a modern take on a 60’s French twist,” he reveals. Want to get your own? Keep reading for Russell’s how-to.

The stylist at Andy Lecompte Salon in Los Angeles prepped her hair with Ouai Soft Mousse ($28, theouai.com) on her roots before blow-drying for volume. After that, Russell dried her locks with a multi-bristle Harry Josh brush and a blow-dryer. Then he curled small sections of her hair with a 1.5-inch barrel iron, pin-curling each and adding Sachajuan Dark Volume Powder ($35, nordstrom.com) while they cooled. Once set, Russell removed the pins and brushed through the curls. For definition, Russell applied Ouai Matte Wax Pomade ($24, theouai.com) to the ends.
To create the French twist, Russell separated out the “mohawk section” of the hair and pin-curled it to create volume. He then fastened the rest of the hair into a roll using bobby pins to secure the style. He released the mohawk section, back-combed for a boost, and secured it into the roll. As a finishing touch, he tucked the face-framing piece behind her ear.
