Little Whoa Peep! Disney Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter revealed the plot of Toy Story 4 on Friday, Aug. 14 — and it's a romantic one!
"It's a love story with Woody and — and this is news — Bo Peep," Lasseter, who directed Pixar's original Toy Story, told CNBC's Squawk on the Street on day one of Disney's D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif. As fans likely remember, the first three Toy Story movies showed occasional flirtations between Woody and Bo Peep, but she was largely absent from Toy Story 3 with the exception of flashbacks.
Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) and Little Bo Peep (Annie Potts) will pick up their budding romance from the second movie. The other films have featured the love stories of Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and Jessie the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), as well as Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head (Don Rickles and Estelle Harris).
Toy Story — which debuted in 1995 — was the first-ever feature-length computer-animated movie. According to CNBC, the first three Toy Story flicks have earned a combined $2 billion at the box office worldwide.
However, Lasseter said profit wasn't Disney's priority. "At Pixar and at Disney, we only make sequels if we come up with a story that's as good or better than the original," he explained. "That's our rule. We don't do things just to print money."
Toy Story 4 will hit theaters in June 2017.
