It's lime time! Justin Timberlake took his Cinco de Mayo celebration to a whole new (and super sour!) level with the release of his ad for Sauza 901 on Monday, May 4.
In the 3-minute clip, Jessica Biel's husband dons a full-on martian green lime costume to portray Rick "Sour" Vane, a bathrobe-clad fruit with an illustrious party past. The singer, however, reminded Us Weekly of a certain '90s classic: The Mask, starring Jim Carrey as the crazy green-faced man.
In the strange commercial, the once-popular drink ingredient — along with maraschino cherries, oranges, and olives — has lost its appeal due to the emergence of Timberlake's tequila brand Sauza 901. "It was like you couldn't drink tequila without one of us,” the lime-headed superstar recalls in the mockumentary-style video. "It was like everything was in slow motion. Literally, we were rock stars."
The ad — styled after Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas and Wolf of Wall Street — shows the limes at the height of their fame, and the bleak realities of life after their fall. "That was the beginning of the end," a sad-faced Timberlake says in the final moments of his bizarre commercial.
Following its release, the dad to newborn tot Silas issued an "apology" for the "Smoothness of Sauza 901 Tequila."
