No tears from Teigen — on camera! Following his win for Best Original Song, John Legend told reporters including Us Weekly inside the Dolby Theatre’s pressroom that his supermodel wife was determined not to let the cameras catch her crying on Sunday, Feb. 22.
“She’s so happy right now,” Legend, 36, said of Teigen after his big win. “She’s been crying since I won, but she tried not to do it on camera… So she didn’t do it like she did last time.”
That last time Legend mentioned was from the Golden Globes last month, when he and Common took home the award for Best Original Song for “Glory.” The cameras panned over to Teigen making a meme-worthy funny cry face while her husband thanked the audience for his award.
At the Oscars on Sunday, an emotionally prepared Teigen beamed instead as Legend took to the stage with Common. And while Teigen didn’t cry in front of the cameras during the show, her husband’s powerful performance with Common moved multiple men to tears including Chris Pine and David Oyelowo.
In their acceptance speech, Common told the crowd that he and Legend recently visited Selma, Alabama, and performed on the very “same bridge that Dr. King and the people of the Civil Rights movement marched on.” The rapper noted: “The spirit of this bridge transcends race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, and social status…this bridge was built on hope, welded with compassion, and elevated by love for all human beings.”
After his big win Legend told reporters that he and Teigen — who were both red carpet fixtures during the entire 2014-15 awards season — were ready to let loose and party.
“We’re going to celebrate tonight,” he told Us. “We’re going to have a great time. This is really important. You know, the Oscars are… there’s nothing like it in the world and for us to win this award, we’re very grateful.”
