Amen! After her sexy opening performance of “Drunk in Love” at last year’s show, Beyonce chose a song with a serious message to close the 2015 Grammys on Sunday, Feb. 8.
Grammys host LL Cool J and Bey’s longtime pal Gwyneth Paltrow introduced her, with Paltrow declaring, “Here is my beautiful friend, Beyonce!”
Wearing a beaded silk tulle gown featuring a sheer cape by Roberto Cavalli Atelier, the pop diva, 33, solemnly took the stage with an all-male choir behind her to sing a hymn her mother Tina Knowles used to sing to her as a child.
Starting the old gospel song, which was featured on the Selma soundtrack, called “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” the 20-time Grammy winner crescendoed into the powerful anthem, which played a vital role in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
Jay Z‘s wife then introduced John Legend and Common to sing “Glory” off the Selma soundtrack.
The song is nominated for an Oscar and already won a Golden Globe last month. It closed out a night of stripped down, simplistic performances from artists like Rihanna, Kanye West, and Ariana Grande.
