Martin Freeman superfans had a field day on Dec. 13 when the Saturday Night Live host combined the two roles he’s best known for — The Hobbit‘s Bilbo Baggins and The Office‘s Tim Canterbury.
The actor, 43, did the sketch “The Office: Middle Earth” in which Bilbo has given up the treasure and returned to work for a paper company.
“Umm, what have I been up to?” he said, wearing his full Hobbit costume and conducting an Office-style interview. “I went on a quest and saved Middle Earth. I became a bit of a hero. Did the noble thing and turned down loads of treasure. Yeah, so the brave Hobbit Bilbo Baggins now works at a paper company.”
His goofy boss is the wizard Gandalf (played by Bobby Moynahan) who calls himself the “Lord of the Reams.” Bilbo works with the evil creature Gollum (played hilariously by Taram Killam) and even puts his precious ring in jello.
“Eww, so yuckies!” Gollum exclaims.
“Well, you don’t choose the people you work with, or go on a quest with,” Bilbo later says.
Freeman played Tim (who later became Jim Halpert on the American version) on all three seasons of the British version of The Office. The third and final Hobbit film, The Battle of the Five Armies, hits theaters on Dec. 17.
