Lush beauty products have always had a cult following — but this past week, that following was kicked into high gear. Following an informative video post on Facebook regarding plastic bottle waste and shampoo, viewers of the viral vid (47 million views is no small feat) flocked to the Lush website and purchased 12,000 bottles of their bottle-less hair cleansers in less than 48 hours.
Now, Shampoo Bars, which are like bars of soap but for your hair are nothing new at Lush. In fact, they’ve existed for quite some time. The brand has 12 different formulations with various essential oil blends to treat unique hair concerns. So the fact that they’re getting a boost now speaks to the growing awareness of the need to reduce the waste going into our oceans.
Each Shampoo Bar retails between $10.95 and $14.95 and according to the brand, last for up to 80 washes — not only making them super affordable but sparing the equivalent of 2.5 plastic bottles of shampoo. According to Lush, in 2017 they sold 1.1 million bars in North America alone, preventing almost 3,000,000 plastic bottles from potentially entering into our waterways.
Given that studies have shown that an estimate of 65-95% of marine pollution is the result of plastic waste, this is no small feat. Further, with an estimated 552 million shampoo bottles thrown out annually, one of the easiest ways to reduce one’s environmental footprint is to cut down on plastic bottle waste. Luckily for Us, Shampoo Bars not only mean less plastic ending in our waterways, but good hair days too.
